Concept
The painting Ups and Downs reflect the ups and downs during a lifetime.
Starting at the platform at the middle to the platform above is youth. Everything seems to be fine and future is bright you explore a lot and learn new things.
After that there's a period of stabilization and downfall. Life seems to be settled and the level of discovering new things goes down till the point the midlife crisis starts to emerge.
Then a new period starts after the midlife crisis. You might start to discover new things, start a new career or travel over the world.
The last stage is a period of downfall again. You're in the stage of being to old to travel, getting lonesome because you lose your friends etc.
Background Story
I was working on some sketches including roads or paths during the Christmas period of 2015. I was thinking about a drawing a path that would be circling around a middle point, a path of which it wasn't clear if it went up or down. So i sketched a pathway.
I thought what if I would put a pillar in the middle to make the road impossible. So i started to sketch the pillar into it and called it Ups and Downs.
The first sketch included only one path that went down so I couldn't call it downs. Furthermore, ups and downs implicates that it has to do with stages of for example life. So I added an extra down to make sure that the concept and the painting would be consistent.
